Gaby Struel June Blog

Where has the past year gone?! I can't believe this will be my last blog, hopefully I'll end with a good one!

Exams are over! Finally! I had my last AS exam on the 5th and we were itching to get back out competing. After a few days away to Tenby with a few friends for a wind down, we planned to go to Wick St Lawrence on the 14th. However, major must have had other ideas as he pulled a shoe off the day before, meaning we'd have to wait for the following weekend to get back out jumping!

On the 13th I went to Cricklands to support some friends that were competing. Yeti was jumping there too, so I got to see her for the first time since selling her in January. She had a fantastic weekend, winning all but one of her classes!

On the 19th I had my first ever visit to Scotland! We went to Edinburgh for the University Open Day.

We finally went so a show on Sunday 21st, we just jumped the Discovery where we had the plank down in the jump off.

Back at school we began A2 coursework and I had an awful lot of Welsh Bac work to complete so unfortunately we didn't have time for any other shows in June. However, as I write this we have just broken up from school for the summer so I'm going we can get out competing a lot throughout the rest of July and August.

The rest of the year is packed with events for Major and I (too many to list!) - firstly we are going to the Welsh Home Pony which is from the 22nd to 26th July.

Having only owned Major since January, we've already achieved and learnt a lot and hopefully a lot more to come. He's a fantastic young horse with huge potential, I hope we can improve with each round and hopefully be jumping some bigger tracks by the end of the year. Major will continue to receive plenty of Likits, it’s become a routine - I'm now unable to catch him from the field unless he gets a Likit treat first!

I will be applying for University in October, where I have everything crossed to be offered a place on the Veterinary Medicine course. I am also thinking of taking a gap year before Uni, where I can gain more experience, travel and of course try and fulfil a few ambitions with Major.

Finally, I'd like to round off by saying a huge, huge thank you to Likit for their incredible support over the past year. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with them, alongside the fantastic #teamlikit riders. I have also had great fun writing monthly blogs and updates about the horses, I've found it to be a great opportunity to reflect on each month and try and improve for the next.

My horses have been totally spoilt by Likit's generosity and I'm sure they have loved every bite of each treat and every play with each toy. It's been a year with many highs and a couple of lows! Horses have come and gone, of course saying goodbye to a 6 year partnership with Yeti in January. Yeti is continuing to be extremely successful in her new home, which makes me so proud. And Tommy has now taken his young rider from learning to do rising trot, to confidently jumping round courses on her own - at the beginning of June they gained 2 double clears and 2 1sts at their first jumping show!

I'd like to share a few of my favourite moments throughout the past year of being a part of #teamlikit ...

Firstly, becoming part of #teamlikit! I remember being so happy just to reach the top 10, but to then come within the top 3 votes and actually become a sponsored rider was such a great feeling - I am so grateful for the opportunity.

Being chosen to represent Wales with Yeti and winning gold on the Welsh Team! 'A dream come true' is pretty much all that needs to be said about this highlight!

Our trip to Switzerland for the Longines Global Champions Tour of Lausanne to celebrate my GCSE results. An experience I will never forget!

Qualifying Yeti for the National Amateur Championships which was held at Aintree Racecourse, and then qualifying for the Grand Prix where we jumped double clear to come in the top 15. Also my last ever show with Yeti, a fantastic end to our time together.

Last but certainly not least, buying Major. I feel so lucky to have such an incredible horse. Jumping him feels like flying, he is so powerful and I am so, so excited for the future with him.

A massive thanks again to Likit!

Wishing good luck to everyone this year and beyond,

Gaby xxx
