Romy's December Blog

2015 has been such an incredible and shattering year for sprout and I, and for our last blog of 2015 I would like to reflect on just how much we have done this year. The supporting video to this article can be viewed below...

January bought cold and fog but some incredible jumping from Sprout, as well as my birthday. We competed at our first show of the year in the NSEA competition at Bury Farm in the 95cm class.

With February came the farewell of Grey the trailer, but hello Henry the lorry! I’m forever grateful to my parents for buying the lorry, it has been so amazing not just for me to have a nap in, but sprout travels a lot better in it as well! February also bought our PB of a jump of 1.50m which was incredible. We completed our first PC intermediate dressage test where we came a respectable 5th.

March we went cross country at Rosehill with Astrid which was fun, as well as bringing around Sprout’s 2 year anniversary with me. We also went to Snowball Farm, where we came joint 1st in the 1m class.

April bought about some sunshine which was nice, and Sprouts first bath of the year hooray! At the end of April, we competed in the PC team’s competition, again at Bury Farm, coming team first in the 1.05m class, Sprout jumping phenomenally! We completed our first ODE of the year in April, which was fun, if a bit wet!

May was jam packed, what with preparing for areas, XC schooling at Attington and GOING TO ROYAL WINDSOR HORSE SHOW WHERE WE WENT DOUBLE CLEAR!!!! Sprout was incredible and I couldn’t have asked for more!

In June we went to Hammer and Harp one day event for our first 100 where we came 6th.

July was the month of areas! Intermediate Dressage we came 9th which I was very pleased with given the tough circumstances. Novice Showjumping was the worst weather! Ending on 8 faults and team 11th I was very pleased. But Novice Area Eventing was the highlight! Sprout performed a beautiful test, and although we had a baby moment showjumping at the man eating plastic wallet, we went clear XC with a fast time!! This was enough to put us into 5th, and team 4th, one place outside qualifying!

August bought a cross country lesson with Owen Moore (Thanks Charlotte!) which was really good, and pony club camp. Sprout and I arrived a day early so he could settle and he loved it. With Chris Hayward as our instructor, I really feel we made progress this year at camp, our dressage improved with sprout being a lot straighter, showjumping came on leaps and bounds, finishing clear round a 1.05-1.10 course, and cross country was superb! Sprout flew all the jumps, including the BE novice ramp and the BE 100 course! I had a great time with all my friends as well :)

The beginning of September was Burnham Horse Trials, where sprout and I got 28.2 dressage, 8f sj and clear XC to come 12th. Without the sj faults we would have been 2nd! Then we were set to go to Blenheim Horse Trials, having been selected for the pony club team, but sprout twisted his pastern the night before, which little did we know was the undoing of the rest of the year! Nonetheless, Littlebourne Championships came, and Sprout and I became Novice Dressage Champions, with 73%, and came 2nd in the puissance at 1.43m, narrowly beaten by a national jumping pony! One weekend later we were at Quainton Stud in a team with Astrid and Lois where we came team 2nd across the 90-1.10m class, Sprout being himself and clearing the 1.10m jumps perfectly, but rushing the small ones! The week following Quainton, we went to Bury Farm for the 1-1.05m pony club jumping where everything went wrong! He bolted and crashed through many jumps, making it clear something was wrong, so we got out local McTimoney therapist out ASAP, where we found he had dropped his pelvis slightly, causing him discomfort! Since then, we haven’t been out as unfortunately he came right for a while, but in all the thick mud recently, it had caused his back to become very tense again, so only recently came back into work. Sprout is having a whale of a time now, (I think he missed being ridden) and I am having fun getting back into my photography, when I should be revising for my mocks! Whoops!

We have a busy January ahead of us, starting with the BCA Charity show on the 9th where sprout and I will be doing the puissance, and the 90-1m showjumping.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to everybody who has helped me this year. Charlotte, for being amazing and our chief saddler; Hayley, Chris and Charly for being the best instructors around, and getting sprout and I to where we are now, I’m so grateful; Lesley, Bethany and Genny at my yard for putting up with Sprout and I... I know how hard it is! Kitty, Alicia, Beth and Rosie for being the most supportive people around, Astrid for being a great friend, Laura, Flo and Ella for being there for us and giving us advice and last but not least, my parents; mum for being chief videographer and chauffeur, as well as supporting me and helping me out; and dad for funding sprout and I, and the support with my photography etc.!

Another massive thank you to my Sponsors of 2015-2016 who have helped me no end with both support and products: Likit, Equiiwear, Jewelled Pony and The Pony Package. To everybody at Likit, thank you so much, your support and products really have made 2015 a brilliant year for us. We already receive so many compliments about our merchandise, and questions on where to buy products, Sprout and I are eternally grateful! Thank you everybody for making 2015 so memorable, roll on 2016! Romy and Sprout xx
